Number of online people on the forum

At one time, I noticed this:
At the same time, there were 5-6 people on the server. So where does the rest come from?
Some of those "online users" are spiders/bots/crawlers from search engines, but are they really that many? Even if only half of them were real users, I find it hard to believe that the forum attracted that much traffic.
Can @Panther answer how many crawlers are usually on the site?
